It was good to start the New Year at the very energetic #GreentheScreen event, at BAFTA on Wednesday, where comedian Alistair McGowan introduced a panel of film-makers already working to make their productions greener.

Melanie Dicks of Greenshoot and Caroline Cooper shared their experience of working together to reduce emissions on the set of The Incident (Working Title). Greenshoot work across departments to help productions develop greener working practices.

It was great to hear real world examples of the challenges and the parts about the process that filmmakers found straightforward.

Using electronic versions of call sheets and scripts was acknowledged as being one of the easiest changes to implement – reducing paper waste by 85% in one case.

Gareth Tandy shared his concern that managing the sustainability of his projects would be an extra burden to his role as first AD, but admitted that he was pleased by how many crew members were ready to get on board and help.

Wendy Wright one of the producers on Casualty uses low energy lighting, to control the heat output on set to avoid setting off the sprinklers in the building!

The GreentheScreen panel agreed that legislation to promote green film-making would make it much easier to make this a priority. They commented that health and safety law is now accepted by everyone where once there were no rules to protect workers on set.

It was great to see how many filmmakers are already thinking green, and how full the BAFTA theatre was with filmmakers who want to learn how to work in an environmentally friendly way. We look forward to catching up with many of them in 2015!
